Children’s Care, Play, Learning and Development
Level 2
This course is suitable for someone who is relatively new to working within a childcare setting. It assesses and develops the knowledge and skills of those employed in a wide range of children and young people settings covering the age range of 0-19.
Who is this Qualifiation for?
This qualification is aimed at post-16 learners in Wales, working or seeking to work, in regulated childcare settings with families and children under the age of 8. This qualification is accessible to all who wish to undertake it, with any barriers which may restrict access and/or progression being identified and supported to ensure equality of opportunity.

How the qualification is structured
To achieve the Level 2 Children’s Care, Play, Learning and Development: Core qualification learners must successfully complete and pass all five mandatory units.
These units are:
- 001 – Principles and Values of Children’s Care, Play, Learning and Development
- 002 – Health, Well-Being, Learning and Development
- 003 – Professional practice as an Early Years and Childcare Worker
- 004 – Safeguarding Children
- 005 – Health and Safety in Children’s Care, Play, Learning and Development
The mandatory units as assessed through:
- three externally set, internal scenario-based assessments; and
- one externally set, externally marked multiple-choice test.
To achieve the Level 2 Children’s Care, Play, Learning and Development: Practice qualification learners must achieve a minimum of 35 credits in total:
- 25 credits must be achieved from the Mandatory group
- A minimum of 3 credits must be achieved from Optional group A
- The balance of 7 credits can be achieved from units in Optional groups A, B or C.
The mandatory units are as follows:
- 200 – Supporting core practice in children’s care, play, learning and development
- 201 – Supporting play, learning, growth and development
- 202 – Supporting nutrition and hydration in early years
- 203 – Responding to signs of potential illness and infestation/infection
*Please note learners must complete the Level 2 in Children’s Care, Play, Learning and Development: Core qualification prior to or alongside this qualification.
Optional Units
Optional units will be discussed with learners and selection based on specific job roles.

What are the benefits of this qualification?
Learners who achieve the Level 2 in Children’s Care, Play, Learning and Development: Core, will then need to progress on to the Level 2 in Children’s Care, Play, Learning and Development: Practice. Once both the core and practice has been achieved a learner will be a recognised level 2 qualified practitioner.
Qualification Time
Completion of this qualification is a maximum of 16 months.
